Monica Cotto, Fashion Stylist
We stay inspired this month with new style secrets from Fashion Stylist, Monica Cotto. She shares her favorite fashion tips for photo shoots and seasoned style advice for always getting the best shot.
What are some of the editorial and fashion brands you have styled as a fashion stylist?
Editorial: Glamour, Self, People, US Weekly, Elegant Bride, Four Seasons Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings, InStyle, New York, Ritz Carlton, Avenue, Coastal Living, Parade.
Brands: Target, Under Armour, Eddie Bauer, Express, Maggie Sottero, Alfred Angelo, Weatherproof
What are the must-have products you stash in your stylist's kit at all times for last minute fixes & behind-the-scenes style secrets?
I keep mini scissors, mini clamps, and Zots (clear adhesive dots). And, I still have to teach assistants to use anything nylon (stockings, sports bras, etc) to rub deodorant off clothing. I’m also looking forward to keeping StrandAlign in my kit to easily prevent tangling when I’m styling necklaces for jewelry and fashion shoots.
Do you have a favorite pat-yourself-on-the-back moment where you thought everything on the photo shoot was falling apart but your fashion experience or quick-style thinking saved the day?
That happens all the time. I try to explain that anything that can go wrong, probably will go wrong. It’s our job to figure out how to fix it. You need to be calm and clear headed. I have talked my way to the head of airport lines to make flights, gotten trunks of clothing through customs, tracked down wayward shipments and create sets where everyone is working as a team to get the best shots
What is your favorite trend this Fall/Winter?
I love the glittery boots that were all over the runways. I have tons of glittery and sequins jackets that I’ve collected over the years that I can dress up or down as well as heels but I’ve never owned a glittery pair of boots and I think now is the time. If you style them so they’re not so precious, you can definitely wear them for more than just ready-to-wear. It’s all about the balance of the outfit.

Have you ever received a piece of advice from a fashion mentor or have personally learned to handle and work through certain fashion politics that you would share with aspiring stylists and fashion industry dreamers?
It goes back to what I said before. Exhaust all avenues for your shoots, go above and beyond to try and make your set work or get what you need for your shoot, whether it’s the perfect look or catching the last shot before losing the light.
